Eating At Kabob Palace Friday - Really!

Okay, this Friday the South Sac crew will finally head down to Elk Grove and eat at Kabob Palace, as was our intention last week.  It's at 9620 Bruceville Rd, Suite 104.  The menu is here.  No, the picture above has nothing to do with the restaurant, but it's public domain!

Sac County Citizens Academy - Indoctrination of the Masses?

Your Sacramento County government offers something called the Citizens Academy.  Is this some kind of Commie re-education camp?  The County's mission is to provide "information and resources," "mutual learning," "critical analysis of issues," and "exchange of ideas and perspectives."  A mutual exchange of ideas?  Seriously?  In my experience, the government's attitude is "my way, or the highway" and "resistance is futile."

Interested spring-butts and ass kissers may volunteer to attend the 10 week propaganda session and become indoctrinated about the criminal justice system by participating in touchy-feely stuff like diversity and race issues.  Here are the classes: Multicultural Sensitivity in the Criminal Justice System; Race as a Factor in the Criminal Justice System; and Perceptions of Disparate Treatment in the Criminal Justice System.

Check the county website for more Citizens Academy Information and the brochure.

Roma II Pizzeria: Pizza - It's What's For Dinner!

So due to complaints last Friday that the South Sac crew was not in fact going to eat in South Sac, but in Elk Grove, we relented to the immense pressure and went to a South Sac icon: Romas.  Roma II Pizzeria, located at 8491 Folsom Blvd Sacramento, has many loyal and dedicated customers, as you can tell from the yelp reviews.  It's in a strip mall as you drive on Folsom from Power Inn/Howe towards Watt.

Romas is a traditional "old school" Italian pizzeria featuring different pastas, salads, subs, and of course, pizza!  Everytime I make up my mind to go there, I say to myself that I will order one of the pasta dishes, because I have seen other people eating them and they look sooo good.  However once inside, I can't resist, and get a pizza.

We got there early Friday evening and the place was packed.  Still we only had to wait about 5-10 minutes and were seated in a booth.  I had the supreme pizza and the house salad, and while I was there I was able to steal one of Roma's meatballs from a crew member's plate.

A pizza here is completely different from a Pizza Hut pan pizza - which to me tastes like the pan pizza at BJ's  Both of those are delicious, but a Roma's pizza is old school.  I find the crust to be more thick than thin.  It is filling.  I pride myself on having the ability to eat 3/4 of a large pizza at one sitting, but a few slices of a Roma's pizza will start getting you full.  After my salad, I was only able to throw down three slices.   By the way, the house salad was a simple tossed garden salad, but the addition of thin sliced salami makes me order it everytime I return.

The meatball side dish one of the crew ordered was cooked in Roma's thick tomato marinara sauce.  The meatball I had was huge, moist and had that bread crumb taste that good meatballs have.  That's why next time I have decided that I will definitely order one of the pasta dishes and I shall report again.

Take The Survey To Improve Mack

The Mack Road Partnership is asking people to take a survey to improve the area around Mack Road in South Sac.  For instance, why do you go there, or why would you go there? What do you want to see there?  Who knows what the end result will be, but if you ask me, taking the survey is like voting: you can't complain about who is elected unless you bother to vote.

The Mack Road Partnership is a Property based Business Improvement District that was approved by the Sacramento City Council.  It is interested in improving safety and security along Mack Road, and encouraging economic development, marketing, advocacy and beautification projects.

Get involved and take the survey.

Heading Over to Kabob Palace on Friday

As regular readers know, the South Sac crew heads out to dinner Friday nights to sample local cuisine.  We have a regular circuit, but are looking to expand it.  This Friday we have decided to venture down to Elk Grove to try out Kabob Palace

Kabob Palace used to be on Franklin but has moved to 9620 Bruceville Road - by the Kohls and across the street from the plaza where the Nugget is located.

Here is the menu, and I'm looking forward to the Baklava for desert.

New Walmart Will be Hiring in Elk Grove

By now you know that a new Walmart will be opening in Elk Grove and that means jobs for the region including South Sac.  Submit your application online here.  Read about the new Walmart here

Personally, I love Walmart.  When I enter one I can't leave without buying something.  I do like the one here in South Sac on Florin but it doesn't seem to be a super duper Walmart as big as the one by Ikea in West Sac or the one in Dixon.  I like to know where the Walmarts are located when I travel, too.  When I'm staying somewhere for business or on vacation the local Walmart is the place to go for food, extra clothes, and of course drinks! Especially that Walmart now sells beer and wine.

Kentucky Fried Chicken?

Ya, that's right.  The crew couldn't decide where to eat out for our usual Friday routine so we decided to get take out and go hang out to watch some TV.  We love to support South Sac businesses so we went to the KFC off of Mack.  You know the one, it's right across the street from Mr. Perry's west.  Can't get more South Sac than that.

We love this KFC.  The kids working there are always upbeat and smiling and they get the food out pretty fast.  Tonight the food was tasty as KFC original chicken usually is.  But it was a little greasier than usual.  I'm paying for it right now.  Also, the cole slaw - KFC makes my favorite - had a bitter after taste tonight.  We'll go back, but not until our KFC craving comes back - and they come back once a month.

We had a coupon good for a 10 pieces of drumsticks and thighs or $12 for white and dark.  No sides though so we had to purchase two.  But after we ordered and were staring at the menu we realized we could have got two four piece meals of white meat which comes with sides and it would have been the same price.  Of course it would only be 8 pieces of chicken, but who wants drumsticks?

Sacramento: Slummy But Sexy?

Does "slummy but sexy" describe downtown Sacramento?  See the article here

Some areas are vibrant, but others are vacant.  In some areas there is business, in others there is blight.  Some areas are clean, in other areas homeless men pee on the sides of buildings.

See a video here about why one restaurant owner moved to Sac Town from San Francisco.

Do You Have A License For That Dog?

Did you know that in Sacramento County, according to the County Code, all persons owning or having a dog - or even a cat for that matter - must have a license for their pets?  Of course, you will have to pay a fee to get the license.

If you want to learn more about how to get a license for your pet, see here

By the way, for people who let their dogs run wild, according to Code 8.08.050, no dog owner shall let their dog be "at large," which means letting it be off of the owner's premises roaming around, or not under a physical restraint.

I guess that means my neighbors are not supposed to let their dogs out to poop on my lawn?
Here's the answer:  According to County Code section 8.08.056, "Dogs at Large," no person shall
permit a dog to stray from private property unless the dog is restrained by a leash or lead not exceeding eight feet in length.

Want to make a complaint?  Here is the link.  For other nonviolent and nonemergency situations you can contact one of these County service centers.

Review of Wonderful Chinese

I did eat at Wonderful Chinese in Elk Grove last Friday and the food and service were good.  We were seated right away in a booth.  We had the dinner specials which allow you to chose an entree and receive won ton soup, egg rolls, fried won tons and steamed or fried rice.  We chose Szechuan Chicken, and Beef and Broccoli as the entrees.  I thought the Beef and Broccoli had an aroma not too pleasing.  I was told it was the Oyster Sauce.  I didn't like it but others in my party did like it.  I loved the Szechuan Chicken, except I am not a fan of mushrooms.  I will go back - we always do - and tell them to hold the shrooms.

While we were there I noticed that the two businesses next door in the strip mall were closing.  One is a small Japanese convenience store called Koryu Mart that I always wondered how it stayed in business.  Everytime I went next door to eat the place looked empty.  Next to that is the Hallmark store.  That is closing and many things inside are 60% off.  I guess when your house is in foreclosure you just aren't interested in buying the small knick-knacks for your house this store sold.

Good Bye Campbell Soup - South Sac Will Miss You

In a previous blog post I described how local politicians had brought home "the bacon."  Now it must be said that state politicians are burning the bacon.  Read on.

According to this article, the Campbell Soup plant in South Sac is beginning its promised job cuts: 290 workers by February 1st, then more by May 1st, and another cut by July 1st.

Why the closure? Higher Taxes? The California Air Resources Board's forced Cap and Trade auction for green house gas emission credits (which is another tax IMO)? Or just the high cost of doing business in California?

Legislators should find out and fix the problem so more businesses won't leave California.

Where to Eat This Friday?

I usually eat out on Friday evenings, and it's time to start thinking about where to go this Friday.  I'm leaning towards a restaurant in Elk Grove called Wonderful Chinese.  It's in a strip mall off of Bond and Hwy 99, but I have always found the food and service to be great.  Here are the reviews from Yelp.   I know this isn't a South Sac place, but it's pretty darn close.

Local Politicians Bring Home the Bacon: A South Sac Rail Extension

Thanks to federal funding, secured by local politicians, RT's Blue line will get a new station at Cosumnes River College.  The story is here

It is hoped that the line will bring 1,700 jobs to the region (of course jobs to construct the line are only temporary), and will cause businesses to pop up near the rail line and new station.  It is also hoped that the rail line, which will allow South Sac residents to ride to downtown Sac, will alleviate traffic on Hwy 99.

I would like to see a bicycle path parallel to the rail lineSacramento area bicyclists need a north-south corridor to get from Elk Grove/South Sac to Downtown Sacramento - where lots of us work.  Can we build bike paths in addition to rail lines?  But that is asking too much.

Superb Subs in South Sac?

I'll probably eat at Superb Subs tonight.  It's in South Sac a few blocks north of Calvine on Elk Grove Florin.  Don't let the outside of this strip mall place fool you.  "Amazing" is the only word I can think of to describe this place.  The name "Superb Subs" is deceptive, too.  It has an incredibly diverse menu.  Sure you can get delicious subs, but my favorite is the Indian curry.  Yes, that's right, curry.  with naan.  Or maybe I'll get the Kung Pao Chicken or a quesadilla.   Like I said, truly amazing.  It's small inside, so you may want to plan to take your order to go.
